For many, the words root canal inspire fear, and even terror. The phrase itself isn’t helping. It sounds like something really painful, right? In the olden days of yore, this might have been the case. But modern root canal procedures have come a long way. Let’s talk about some of the myths associated with root canals, and make sure we’re dealing with hard facts. This procedure is too important to avoid!

Myths About Root Canals:

  • The procedure is akin to medieval torture
  • Treatment can make you sick
  • A tooth extraction works just as well
  • Your tooth roots are removed

Myth #1: Treatment Is Too Painful to Consider

We’ve likely all shuddered at the thought of having our literal tooth roots taken out of our mouths. That sounds horrific. First of all, the tooth roots aren’t actually removed, which we’ll get to a bit later, but most importantly, modern dentistry has evolved dramatically from the early days of root canals. Bless those pioneers for undergoing painful treatments, as dentists and researchers figured out the better methods of treatment we get to enjoy today.

Many people associate pain with root canals for the simple fact that root canals are needed for people whose teeth are infected. The infection causes pain, a root canal promotes healing, and the cessation of pain. Modern dentists are fantastic at pain management, and new tools make removing damaged tissue a painless process.

Myth #2: Root Canals Cause Illness

There’s so much misinformation floating around the interwebs. Maybe you’ve seen websites or people in the dark corners of forums claiming that root canals will make you ill or more susceptible to future diseases. On the contrary! This is a false claim based on old research that’s been disproven. You know what can make you systemically sick? An infected tooth that isn’t treated.

Myth #3: Just Get the Tooth Removed

This is an option; however, it’s not the best option in most cases. Your natural teeth are always best in terms of function, overall oral health, and looks. Replacing your existing teeth with implants or a bridge involves more treatment time, cost, and may cause further issues down the road with nearby teeth and tissue. If it’s possible to save your teeth with a root canal, this is the best option!

Myth #4: They’ll Take the Whole Root!

Ahh, not the whole root! Actually, your roots stay in your mouth during a root canal. Your dentist will remove the infected pulp (not the root) using small tools designed to cause the least discomfort. Your tooth will also be cleaned and disinfected, and then filled with a dental material and sealed. Generally, you’ll get a permanent crown placed at a later visit to keep your tooth protected and functional.
