TMJ Treatment in Vienna, VA

Do you experience pain in your face, neck, or jaw or have trouble opening and closing your mouth comfortably? Does constant clenching and grinding of your teeth result in pain and muscle tension? These are problems that may be related to a disorder with your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. Your TMJ controls the up and down and side to side movement of your jaw. When it isn't functioning properly, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms such as:

TMJ Treatment in Vienna, VA

  • Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism)
  • Muscle stiffness in the jaw and shoulders
  • Limited range of motion of the TMJ
  • Clicking or popping sounds when you open or close your jaw
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your jaw

Disorders of the TMJ can be difficult to diagnose, but for over 40 years, Dr. Barry Rudolph has been helping patients with the uncomfortable symptoms of TMJ. Very often, he can provide relief by using conservative treatment options available at our Vienna, VA dental office.

What Is a TMJ Disorder?

The TMJ is one of the most complicated joints in the human body. Its complex movement poses a challenge for both patients and healthcare providers when something goes wrong.

Disorders of the TMJ vary widely from person to person, and the exact cause of these problems is not known. While trauma to the jaw plays a part in some cases of TMJ, for the most part, scientists don’t know the cause. But Dr. Rudolph has had excellent success over the years with diagnosing the source of the disorder and providing effective, conservative solutions.

Treating TMJ

There is no widely accepted standard of care for treating TMJ disorders, so Dr. Rudolph must adapt treatment to each patient’s individual needs. In addition to learning about your medical and dental history, he will examine the areas giving you problems, including the jaw, head, neck, and face.

He will listen to the joint and perform range of motion and loading tests. Dr. Rudolph may also recommend digital imaging with our state-of-the-art cone beam technology, which gives him a three-dimensional view of the joint and surrounding area.

Depending on your needs, there are several ways we can approach TMJ treatment:

  • Self-care practices – You may have certain habits like gum chewing that can contribute to painful TMJ symptoms, and Dr. Rudolph can explain movements you should avoid that can aggravate your symptoms. He may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, switching to softer foods, applying ice packs, and reducing stress with relaxation techniques. ?

  • Nightguard – This is an effective treatment for patients who grind their teeth with a side-to-side or front-to-back movement. The guard fits over your upper teeth like a sports guard and prevents your teeth from coming together during sleep.
  • NTI Device – While a night guard prevents grinding, it does not stop the clenching motion. In this case, Dr. Rudolph would recommend an NTI device. An NTI device is worn on either your upper or lower front teeth. As you start to clench your jaw, you bite down on the device, stopping the movement before it starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer to this question will vary greatly depending on the patient's unique needs, the severity of their case, and the type of treatment they're getting. Some patients may experience relief right away with a night guard, for example. At the same time, it may take months for someone getting orthodontic treatment to correct a misaligned bite to experience relief.

At Vienna Family Dental, we believe in getting to the root cause of the jaw joint (TMJ) problem to determine the most effective treatment procedures. Our dentists work closely with you to determine the cause of your discomfort and the most suitable treatment for your specific needs.

Some of the TMJ treatment modalities our dentists may recommend could be one or more of these procedures:

  • Stress Management — Managing stress through practices like yoga, massage, and therapy can be helpful for some patients in managing TMJ issues.
  • Night Guards — Wearing a protective device, much like an orthodontic retainer, at night while you sleep can prevent tooth clenching and grinding (bruxism).
  • NTI Devices — An NTI device stops bruxism before it even starts when you bite down into the device instead.
  • Orthodontic Treatment — If a misaligned bite is causing TMJ concerns, clear aligners or braces might be the solution for aligning your bite and alleviating TMJ discomfort.

TMJ disorders (TMD) are issues affecting the temporomandibular joint, which controls the jaw and surrounding muscles. TMD often creates symptoms that develop gradually, only some of which are immediately recognizable as jaw-related. If you are suffering from these symptoms, we offer specialized TMJ treatment in Vienna to help you find relief.

Many patients also experience symptoms during stressful periods or after dental or orthodontic changes. Because TMD can mimic ear infections, sinus issues, and even migraines, a precise TMJ exam is essential.

Common Symptoms of TMD

Diagram of common TMJ symptoms including jaw pain, clicking, and headachesTMD symptoms can vary, but several patterns appear frequently. If you notice any of the following, we strongly recommend a professional evaluation:

  • Jaw clicking, popping, or grinding during movement
  • Headaches or facial soreness that worsens with chewing
  • Jaw stiffness or limited opening
  • Pain around the ears, temples, or cheeks
  • A bite that suddenly feels “off”
  • Tenderness in the neck, shoulders, or jaw muscles

The Value of Timely TMD Treatment

Thankfully, catching these issues early helps prevent chronic discomfort. At Vienna Family Dental, Dr. David Paino will take the time to evaluate your jaw alignment, muscle tension, bite balance, and joint function to determine what’s causing your discomfort. After that, to ensure that you get relief ASAP, we will review treatment options, including bite adjustments, nightguards, or muscle-relaxation strategies, suited to your specific case.

"Dentistry is the absolute perfect profession for me. Thinking outside the box to solve problems requires a combination of intellect and manual dexterity that suits my skill set. As a child, I had an old school dentist who was pretty rough around the edges, and my family shared countless horror stories. I always thought I could change their perception of what a dentist is and what a dental appointment should be like." - Dr. David Paino
