Do you hear a clicking sound in your jaw joint when you yawn? Does the joint ache periodically or constantly? You may have temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Tips to help alleviate symptoms include:

  • Jaw joint exercises recommended by your doctor or dentist
  • Spending a few days on a soft food diet to rest the joints
  • Using ice packs periodically to dull the ache or discomfort
  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen
  • Taking a prescribed muscle relaxer to reduce symptoms

Your doctor or dentist may recommend specific tips to alleviate symptoms or prescribe treatment, such as surgery, self-care, a nightguard, or an NTI device.

What Is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder?

TMJ means the hinge-like joints that allow your lower jaw to move are not functioning properly. Untreated TMJ can make eating, speaking, and yawning difficult. Additionally, the condition is painful and affects the head, neck, shoulders, and jaw.

Causes include:

  • Anatomical abnormalities
  • Injuries to the face or jaw
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)

Sometimes, the cause of TMJ is not immediately apparent, but that doesn’t mean we can’t provide effective treatment.

TMJ Treatment in Vienna, VA

Your dentist assesses your TMJ to create a custom treatment plan that addresses your level of dysfunction. We may recommend one or more treatments to ensure your success.

TMJ therapy may include:

  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgery is the best option to restore function.
  • Nightguard: Nightguards are ideal, especially if your TMJ results from bruxism.
  • NTI Device: Nightguards help prevent teeth grinding, but the NTI works for grinding and clenching.

We custom-make your nightguard or NTI device to fit your teeth and prevent upper and lower jaw connection while you sleep. Your dentist may also recommend specific therapies or medications to assist in treatment.
