Risks Associated with Invisalign

Invisalign is a state-of-the-art orthodontic treatment clinically proven to correct mild misalignments and malocclusion. Millions of people can attribute their healthier, more symmetrical smiles to Invisalign. However, it's not an ideal treatment for everyone, and there are some risks associated with Invisalign that patients should be aware of when choosing their orthodontic treatment.

Our Vienna dental office proudly offers Invisalign, ClearCorrect, and SureSmile, and we can even create and manufacture 3-D printed clear aligners on-site using our 3Shape's Clear Aligner Studio software. Invisalign is probably the most popular and sought-after clear aligner treatment, but we would like to share some risks or side effects associated with Invisalign.

#1 Temporary Tenderness and Discomfort

Tenderness and discomfort are natural for first-time Invisalign users. This discomfort will only last a few days, but when your mouth gets used to the aligners, the tenderness subsides, and you'll feel comfortable throughout your treatment.

#2 Dislodged Fillings

If you have a filling in the center of your tooth, wearing Invisalign braces can dislodge it. The filling can loosen when biting down on the aligners, so you must be careful and mindful of this when wearing your aligners. Your dentist can also advise you on how to best approach this.

#3 Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ)

Pain or soreness in the jaw joints is a common symptom of TMJ disorder. This disorder can make it difficult to open or close your mouth, and it can cause stiffness in the jaw and neck. If you have TMJ, your dentist will speak with you about your condition and if Invisalign is right for you.
