If you're suffering from a tooth infection, you should know that getting root canal treatment is no longer the horrifying experience you may have heard about. These days, a root canal procedure is comfortable, efficient, and effective, and most patients feel like themselves again in about a week.

Here's what you should know about the procedure and some valuable tips on helping the healing process.

#1 Be Gentle with Your Mouth

You are recovering from a tooth infection, so for the first couple of days after surgery, you may be sore or tender, and that's completely normal. Eating softer foods at room temperature will help avoid irritating your compromised tooth.

Here are some soft food ideas:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Apple sauce
  • Oatmeal

Use an ice pack for swelling and Ibuprofen or medication for pain management. Avoid smoking, tobacco use, and vigorous exercise for 72 hours after your procedure.

#2 Get Plenty of Rest

If you plan to be off work for the first few days after your procedure, getting as much sleep as possible will significantly help your healing process. Take it easy and keep activities to a minimum as much as possible for the first few days after your procedure.

#3 Monitor Your Healing Progress Closely

While it's normal to feel discomfort after a root canal procedure, you should contact your Vienna Family Dental team immediately if you're having severe pain, even with medication or swelling that's not subsiding over time. Your dentist in Vienna, VA, may want to see you to ensure no further problems develop.
