Despite their intimidating reputation, root canals are common, straightforward, and pain-free procedures. Here is an overview of reasons why one might need a root canal, and what to expect during and after the procedure.
What’s a root canal?
A root canal is a procedure to remove a tooth´s injured or infected internal soft tissue or ¨pulp.¨ This pulp, the living part of the tooth, consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
When is a Root Canal Necessary?
The need for a root canal arises when bacteria enter a tooth through a crack or untreated cavity and is left untreated to the point of inflammation and infection in the pulp, or “pulpitis.” In addition to being quite painful, pulpitis, if left untreated, can result in an abscess (collection of pus) in the affected area, which can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and infection that can affect the jawbone and spread elsewhere in the body.
Symptoms that pulpitis has progressed to the point of necessitating a root canal include:
- Severe toothache
- Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
- Swelling or tenderness around the affected tooth
- Sensitivity to pressure
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should consult a dentist as soon as possible to determine if a root canal is necessary.
What To Expect During and After a Root Canal
In a root canal procedure, the dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding gums to ensure a pain-free treatment. Then, using special instruments, the damaged pulp is removed, and the empty space is cleaned and sealed with a filling material that prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
After a seven-to-ten-day recovery period, the patient and dentist choose between the long-term options of sealing the opening with filling material or placing a porcelain crown atop the remains of the tooth. With proper care, the effects of a root canal can last for ten to fifteen years with no need for retreatment.
